I’m a idiot for not having this looked into years ago. Doctor says it can kill you. The “event” I captured on the event monitor had my heartrate at 242. She said, “Your heart can’t do that for very long before it quits”.
The doctor thinks it’s Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome since it runs in the family. My mom and my sister both had/have it. Basically, I have at least one extra electrical pathway in heart that sometimes throws it into a loop. She won’t know for sure the cause of the tachycardia until she gets into my heart.
The fix is Radio frequency ablation. They stick two catheters into a vein in my groin and go all the way up into my heart where they take out the extra pathway(s). It supposed to be a relatively easy procedure and only requires me to spend one night in the hospital.
I should only be down for a week assuming my pathways don’t go near the AV node, our natural pacemaker. If that is the case she wouldn’t be able to ablate the pathway without harming the AV node which would require me to get a pacemaker. Since I don’t want a pacemaker I would have to live with the WPW which would put an end to hard exercise of any kind. Of course she also had to tell me that I could die in surgery but that it is very rare. I looked it up and it’s 1 in 1000 die during the procedure. Doh!
The doctor doesn’t want me riding hard so I want to get the procedure ASAP and get back to riding hard. I can ride easy in the meantime. Looks like I won’t be racing Arrowhead on the 30th. I was really looking forward to that.
Next step is an echocardiogram and then I can schedule the procedure.

I remember the long list of things wrong with my spine before my surgery. The year prior I had a procedure on my left arm that also had a risk of me losing dexterity. This is a horrid thing to tell a musician.
The spine, the heart, these are scary words. I will say this, the not knowing and the tests are torture, but they will figure out what is best for you and what should be done. They have to tell you all those terrible things (just in case). Have faith that you are in the best health anyone could be. Try not to think the worst and imagine yourself on a bike.
Know that you have freinds, and that will be sending all our positive energy your way. It’s hard to imagine now, but it will be over before you know it. Hang tough my brother.

Damn, Silk!! Why you gotta throw down the heavy for me first thing monday morning??!!! W.B. is on the right page, though. The anticipation and anxiety are usually a lot worse than the reality. Look at it this way, you’ll have more time to ride with your slow friends like us again, at least for a little while. How long before you do any of the procedures?
Good luck, I hope everything turns out ok!
Thanks guys. Worm is right, the anxiety is the worst. I just want to get it done and move on.
If you have to slow down for a while, we will make you a nice comfortable spot in the BRC paceline. It’s not so bad, really. We eat good.
Remember, stressing won’t help.

Scary Dude,
As my “1 in 5000″ vasectomy failure only got me another kid,
1 DEATH in 1000, is frightening.
Yesh! Maybe you should borrow my MountainBike Extreme video game, and consider the alternative.
But No, I couldn’t give up real riding either.
Hope the procedure goes quick and easy.
Juancho when I first read that I instantly had an image of the BRC out in the forrest, bikes thrown to the ground, just chowin’ on a side of ribs.
Keith you are not helping my anxiety. Did you make sure to wank a few times in order to disband all your soldiers already marching?
mmm, ribs.
Just wanted to let you know that I had an the same proceedure done in Birmingham, Alabama about 10 years ago when it was still expiramental and it turned my life around. My heartrate was around 300 bpm the last time before the surgery. Trinity Hospital was where I had my surgery and my surgeon was Dr. Troup a doctor at the Alabama Heart Institute. He was awsome! Just to let you know how well I did I raced the Callaway Gardens Mountain Bike race Sunday with some guys from BIKECHAIN.COM where I found your site. Good luck and you will be back in no time.
Thanks Chris.
