California orange in “The Citrus State”

It’s weird to eat a California orange when I live in the citrus state. This orange had to be transported all the way across the country for me to eat it. That’s not green, but it tasted so good.

Speaking of interstate fruit… a co-worker’s brother owns a strawberry farm in Plant City Fl. Each year they fly a plane load of baby strawberry plants out to Colorado and plant them in some valley in the Rockies where they spend the summer. Then these pampered plants are dug up and loaded up on their return flight, first class, back to Plant City. There they spend the next few months being very fruitful. Hard to believe but sworn to me as truth.
Sounds crazy, but it wouldn’t surprise me. I don’t see how he could stay in business doing that when we can just get California strawberries shipped one way, but I don’t know anything about the agriculture business.
It happens, every now and then I end up eating a Florida orange, and i’m in orange county so I really wonder what its doing there.
I guess it all comes down to what’s in season… if you want fruit year round you’ll get some from far away places.
