At the Tallahassee SORBA chapter re-org meeting last night I learned some things.
The Good
If I understand John Harvey correctly the yellow represents approximately where more trail could be. The pink roughly represents the existing multi-use trail. Click for bigger.

The Not As Good
An Event
One topic that interests me, given my love of racing, is some sort of event. XC or Enduro was mentioned. My vote would be a time trail series similar to the popular Snake Creek TT’s that NWGA SORBA does. Two classes, money and non-money. You compete against the clock and your previous best. Simple and painful. Munson/Twilight Zone combo would be a sweet TT course.

Sorry I missed it, I forgot. You know you can count on me…to do almost nothing useful.
The last approved management plan for Maclay/Overstreet is at: http://www.dep.state.fl.us/parks/planning/parkplans/AlfredBMaclayGardensStatePark.pdf
Check out page 41 for the most recent approved management plan conceptual map.
Of particular note:
- This plan is several years old, conceptual facilities are just that and are subject to management’s decision to move forward and boatloads of ‘ologists review. This is not necessarily a bad thing folks (think of future generations if you can).
- The equestrian trail covers huge swaths of the park that are currently not used. I have flagged this trail twice in the past ten years for park management but it’s still a concept. If the budget and the horsies push for it then it may happen one day. The horse folks want this to be fairly tight single-track (read between lines).
- The proposed additional mountain bike segment on the south side would make a cool link and surfs more interesting topography than the existing single-track.
- Notice where the “secret trail” was there are no trails proposed. The ‘ologists nixed my proposals for this corridor but every five years I will politely push for usage of this corridor because I disagree that it’s too wet and slopey for a sustainable trail.
Question: Why is there conceptual horse trail all over the park and only a sliver of new bike trail? Because the equestrians were at the table every time a planning workshop was held for the past two decades and the mountain bike community was not. They want to work with us, they know we are here and that is why they asked us to design/build the existing Overstreet Trail. But there is much missed opportunity with no organization (perhaps that’s changing now).
I have a very good relationship with Park Management and will gladly press for progress on proposed mtn. bike trails if a few honchos will step up and be willing to stay at the table and play the game by their rules - knowing it takes years from flagging to lopping.
Great map John, thanks. We’ll talk again at the next meeting. I’m ready, just need to recruit a couple more.
Jauncho, see you at the next meeting.
Thanks, I am proud of this map. It shows how a volunteer can influence things. Yes, there was a process of review and revision from my original proposals and I addressed their concerns or mandates but every conceptual line, junction, overlook and boardwalk on this map came directly, with no changes, from GIS data that I created and provided to DEP.
