Conditions are perfect on the northside. Fast and tacky.
Big news, there’s new singletrack at Red Bug and it seems like it will be nice and fast. It’s still very soft so get out there and ride it in. You’ll find it in the section up near the new playground. Thanks to whoever cut this in.
Bad news is the Phipps land managers are cutting in fire breaks for a burn and have plowed my favorite section of Phipps double track into a lumpy, soft, rutty, slow mess. Isn’t a double track dirt road for all intents and purposes a fire break? Why plow it? I think I’ll email Chuck Goodheart and see if they can drive it a few times to pack it back down.
Saturday I did a HTFU ride in the rain. I heard Big Worm, Terry and Zak did the same. Spot on lads!
On Sunday my morning was spoken for and when the afternoon rolled around I decided I had to tackle a challenge that’s been in my mind for a few weeks now. I ran all the hiking trails at Phipps. Ended up around 7.5 miles but it took an hour and a half. I’m still hydrating like it’s September and I had to pee 4 times. I think my dog pee’d about 50 times. The carpet of leaves on the ground made it a little tricky. Those trails are dang rooty and I had a few near ankle rolls. Even my dog tripped on a root and how often do you see a dog trip on a root?
It doesn’t seem like so long ago that my thermometer looked like this.
I don’t think it’s just me. Everyone seems to be talking about it this year. Has cyclocross finally blown up in the U.S.? I think so. The fact that Floridians are making the trip to iced up Kansas for cyclocross nationals confirms it.
Conditions looked tough. I imagine they were especially shocking for Floridians. How often do we ride on ice?
Those photos are from CyclingNews see all of them here and results here
I get a laugh out of this new bike culture of guys wearing girls jeans and riding fixed gears. Don’t get me wrong. I love anyone that loves bikes… or anyone that loves getting off their asses and getting outdoors no matter what the hobby, but I don’t know about this fixed-gear-emo fad. I’m not saying you have to wear lycra whenever you ride a bike. Hell I hate lycra and wouldn’t wear it at all if it weren’t so darn functional.
Apparently I’m not the only one. Anyone that has ever skated will get a good laugh out of this “Fixed Push” satire video.
To those that think it’s to cold to ride at 9am in Tallahassee, FL have a look at the photos from Mike Phillips’ 6am ride in Milwaukee. Around this house the lady gets to ride at peak times so I just HTFU and ride early or it’s no ride at all. Do what Chopper says and HTFU.
